As a member of Sacramento Costumers I bring a variety of interests that may all be found in theater: Puppetry, story making, surface and lighting design, and music. One of the perks of my job is being invited to events that I would not usually go to on my own. I saw a production of The Lion King from the pit and it left me with a craving for puppetry. I’m also involved with costume design at American River College Theater. I have created puppet plays with students at ARC. This experience has lingered and in addition to working with Sacramento Costumers, I am still creating puppets and puppet plays.
I decided to study fashion after working with special needs girls who don’t have access to appropriate frocks. What might be age appropriate, but may not be developmentally or physically appropriate. This task prompted me to take a pattern making class in a costume shop. It was there I realized that costuming was the path I needed to follow. I’m a costumer in the broadest sense of the word: making garments to fit an occupation. I want to know: What are you doing? What do you want to wear?
A little about me: I’ve sung my way through school over my career. And in the process, I’ve also performed quite a few tasks in theater, proper. Jazz choir and public relations in Solano College. Following Solano, I also did PR for the Matrix Artists Collective. How did I get there? Well, I began my adult (non-high school) theater experience lighting with Debora Stoll. We created lighting for dance and small-box theater. After that I did lighting designs for bands and plays in San Francisco. This was my introduction to working behind the scenes and encouraged me to continue.
It’s been an exciting and interesting path through the stage to find myself here, with Sacramento Costumers.
